Las Vegas, as most of us know and some of us guess, is a pretty diverse and colorful place.
The UNLV community area, more specifically around Maryland Parkway, is a big part of the rainbow too. And it is not only the international students living in the university dorms who bring out the ethnic diversity, but it is also the people who have come here from distant parts of the world to start new lives, businesses and families. They are the ones who have come to the community not only to discover a new culture, but to passionately share theirs with the rest of us too.
Although a little outdated, but based on a slightly lengthy fact sheet from City-Data.com, the population for the area in 2005 was estimated to be 55,350.
A lot of people have come far to settle down here and according to the website;
Foreign-born population: 14,386 (29.5%)
(26.1% of them are naturalized citizens)
Majority of the residents have actually come from Mexico, Philippines, El Salvador, Cuba, Eastern Europe, Korea and Guatemala.
Continuing in the same year, the site also goes into further details and explores the spoken languages too;
61.5% of residents of 89119 zip code speak English at home.
27.5% of residents speak Spanish at home (37% very well, 24% well, 26% not well, 12% not at all).
3.9% of residents speak other Indo-European language at home (61% very well, 22% well, 13% not well, 5% not at all).
5.8% of residents speak Asian or Pacific Island language at home (58% very well, 28% well, 13% not well, 1% not at all).
1.3% of residents speak other language at home (74% very well, 21% well, 5% not well).
Clearly, the city is not simply diverse because of its many foreign visitors, gamblers and party animals, but also because of all the people who live in the many neighborhoods within its borders. The Maryland Parkway community is a “melting pot” of the world and you can check it out at http://www.city-data.com/zips/89119.html.
